Background

The project enhances the Research Centre in European Private Law established in 2016 at Università degli Studi Suor Orsola Benincasa to conduct high-level research on European Private Law, with an interdisciplinary and comparative law perspective, promoting a ‘unification’ of several areas of European law. Precisely because of the legal challenges arising from new technologies, ReCEPL promotes and actively seeks interdisciplinary collaborations with academics from other areas.

At the same time, the ReCEPL Centre coordinates with the Living Lab Utopia, the legal research laboratory of the Interdepartmental Centre for Planning and Research of the University ‘Scienza Nuova,’ also based at UNISOB. Scienza Nuova is an interdisciplinary centre by nature and equipped with state- of-the-art technology, suitable for experimenting with new research methodologies, such as empirical studies and behavioral analysis. These methodologies are developed in cooperation with interdisciplinary scholars from diverse fields, including statistics, IT, neuroscience, engineering, psychology, human- machine interaction (HMI), and communication sciences.

ReCEPL has a longstanding commitment to critically analysing and disseminating best practices for implementing European legislation, with particular attention to new technologies law and sustainability law. Its research activities are centred on safeguarding human dignity and mitigating vulnerabilities in the digital environment. The Centre aligns its work with the European Union’s framework, ensuring that technological advancements support fundamental rights, democracy, and sustainable development.

Previous projects

The ReCEPL4STAI Project is built on previous research experiences led by ReCEPL Director and Researchers. Precisely because of its interdisciplinary capacity and its ability to also rely on the university’s research facilities, the ReCEPL centre has already obtained European and international co-funding for projects:

European REC line project

  • A European REC line project on personal data protection was developed in the ReCEPL Centre TAtoDPR (Training Activities to implement the Data Protection Reform) www.tatodpr.eu,

This project resulted in:

a) a second-level master’s degree in Data Protection Officer training (now in its third edition) which developed a training program for DPO) across three EU Member States, utilising a multidimensional learning methodology.

b) an open access diamond scientific journal entitled ‘European Journal of Privacy Law & Technologies’ (EJPLT)

c) a monographic series on Law&Tech issues

Jean Monnet Chair PROTECH

Jean Monnet Chair PROTECH, chaired by Prof. Lucilla Gatt, that developed a new label highlighting protective measures within European law, focusing on the vulnerabilities individuals face in technological environments.

The creation of Jurimetrics and Artificial Intelligence (JurAI) Consortium, an official advisor to the European Commission for the Efficiency of Justice (CEPEJ), analysing the role of AI in judicial data processing and predictive justice.

Jean Monnet Chair EUGREENEXT

Jean Monnet Chair EUGREENEXT, chaired by Prof. Ilaria Caggiano, which aimed to redefine fundamental rights for future generations through a sustainability-focused approach in European law, addressing health, environmental, and welfare concerns.

CREA3 (Conflict Resolution with Equitative Algorithms)

CREA3 (Conflict Resolution with Equitative Algorithms), which promoted the digitalisation of justice in the field of family law at the national and European level, to develop an effective and harmonised European justice area.

Research lines

Therefore, the activities of ReCEPL4STAI fit into those already initiated by the ReCEPL Centre, to foster synergies and to optimise research management. At the same time, internal study groups are also active, pursuing research objectives independently of the availability of funding:

 AI Impact Assessment
Animals Law
Cultural Property Law
ECHR
Green Law
Jurimetrics and Artificial Intelligence
Law, Tech and Covid
Neurotechnologies
Space Law
Teaching Private Law
Values Machine Learning
PRILeD – Privacy, informazione e legal design
Privacy and the Internet of Things: a Behavioral and Legal Approach

EU’s fundamental values.

ReCEPL’s commitment to research excellence

The Centre actively promotes best practices for implementing European legislation in the digital age. It has spearheaded various studies and events addressing the harmonisation of European laws, particularly in AI law and digital governance. ReCEPL fosters dialogue on the European regulatory framework for AI through conferences and seminars, as well as specialised training programs.

ReCEPL’s commitment to research excellence and policy development positions is an added value for the implementation of ReCEPL4STAI and, in parallel, for the development of academic and civil society debate about AI, ensuring a sustainable and correct development of this technology, in compliance with the EU’s fundamental values.
