The research methodology aims to assess the impact of AI systems on fundamental rights, applying legal rules and ethical principles on AI at the EU Level to AI systems design, respecting the human-in- the-loop- Particular attention is paid to the implementation of the concepts of Privacy-by-Design, Security-by-Design and Ethics-by-Design, in order to prevent any systemic risks or negative impacts on fundamental rights from the initial design phase, guaranteeing the transposition of EU legal-ethical principles into AI systems design.

This methodology will be developed based on:

Regulations and principles

An analysis of key European regulations and principles

Identification of the main risks

The identification of the main risks to fundamental rights arising from the use of artificial intelligence

Multidisciplinary model

The adoption of multidisciplinary impact analysis models combining legal, technical and ethical aspects.

ReCEPL4STAI adopts a comprehensive research strategy that integrates quantitative, qualitative, experimental, and case-study methods. This approach aligns with a broader research framework that incorporates cross-national comparative and transnational methodologies. The research activities are conducted using a mixed-method approach that leverages the expertise of an interdisciplinary team composed of social science and STEM to establish an innovative applied research paradigm.

The following methods will be employed:

AI

Examination of emerging AI technologies and assessment tools (Critical analysis of the state of the art)

ELS

Empirical legal studies (ELS)

HMI

Law & Economics analysis and Behavioural analysis particularly focused on HMI.
